Queen Creek's Guide To Black Widow Spider Control

Adult mud daubers grow to a fairly large size, between 1 ½ and 2 inches in length. Their appearance varies depending on the specific species but, in general, they have a narrow waist with a thread-like segment (petiole) between their thorax and abdomen that causes them to look like they have been “stretched." They range in color from black to metallic blue and may or may not have yellow or green markings. Mud daubers can also be identified by the distinctive nests that they create out of mud and other natural materials.
Mud Daubers are a solitary species, are quite docile in nature, and are a species of the stinging insect that rarely stings. Even though mud daubers aren’t super aggressive, they do have the ability to deliver a painful sting and their venom is strong enough to trigger an allergic reaction in some people. Like all species of stinging insects, care should be taken around mud daubers. You should never try to remove a nest on your own.
Mud daubers prefer to build their small nests underneath overhangs or in places that provide a lot of shelter. Their nests are often found under roof eaves, under porches and decks, in doorways, in rock crevices, or inside attics, barns, or sheds.
The most common reason why mud daubers are on your property is that it is providing them with a suitable place to build their nest. Also, mud daubers are a predatory species that mainly feed on spiders. If spiders and other insects are plentiful on your property, it may be attractive to mud daubers.

Preventing problems with mud daubers can be a daunting task, but there are some steps you can take to help deter them and prevent them. Seal any gaps in your home’s foundation, exterior walls, and around utilities, windows and doors entering into your home. Replace broken or missing roof shingles and make sure that chimneys have caps on them. It is also important to eliminate easy access to water sources by repairing leaky pipes and drains and by making sure your gutters are functioning properly. Remove piles of debris from your property that mud daubers could create nests in.
