Livermore residents are constantly on the lookout for ways to keep insects and creatures out of their property. There are a few species that people are particularly passionate about. For instance, rodents are a big concern for home and business owners. These animals destroy property by chewing on structures and wires. Even worse, they harbor parasites in their fur that can make us sick. They also reproduce rapidly, making them a challenge to get rid of. Cockroaches present similar risks, which is why they too stress folks out.

Cockroaches are a persistent problem for many. There are four key things you can do to reduce the chances of having to confront them. Take a few moments to learn what those items are, and how Pro Active Pest Control can be of use to you. We offer residential and commercial pest control, rodent control, bed bug control, and more.

Tip #1: Patch Things Up Around Your Property

Cockroaches have flexible bodies that help them get through any size hole. That said, you need to check your foundations and walls for cracks and gaps. If you find any, seal them up right away. Don’t forget to look around the windows and doors. Speaking of doors, attach sweeps to all exterior entrances. You’ll also need to repair any plumbing problems, moisture issues, and leaks. This will cut off a roach’s water source. Some subspecies thrive around water, so use a dehumidifier. The oriental bugs, which are common in Sacramento, are an example.

Oriental cockroaches: This species grows to be about an inch long, with reddish-brown or black bodies. They are notorious for being in drains, pipes, sewers, and gutters.

Tip #2: Start Cleaning

You have to be thorough with your cleaning routine; no half-stepping. To starve cockroaches, you need to wash your dishes regularly, and immediately take care of spills and crumbs. Remove trash often. Store your food and garbage in containers with tight tops. Reduce clutter. Before you bring a package, box, paper bag, storage item, or second-hand purchase indoors, examine it. Cockroaches, especially German cockroaches, love to nestle in those kinds of things.

German cockroaches: This species varies in size from 1/2 to ⅝ of an inch long. Horizontal stripes crown the heads of their brown or tan bodies. Young German cockroaches are black but still have visible stripes.

Tip #3 Get Outside

Several cockroaches, such as the Turkestan variety, flourish outdoors. They’ll fester in high grass, tree bark, gardens, plants, and other organic matter. Considering this, you should make it a point to trim your lawn frequently. You'll also need to regularly groom flowers and plants, and place them at a distance. They should be at least two feet away from your building. Make sure to remove dead leaves, logs, and debris from your yard.

Turkestan cockroaches: These are very dominant in Sacramento. A relative of the oriental roach, they are rusty red, brown, or black. Cream-colored markings adorn their bodies. The males are brown-orange with yellowish wings. Most grow to be about one inch long or less.

Tip #4 Call Pro Active Pest Control for Extermination Services

As mentioned earlier, cockroaches pose comparable threats to rodents. They creep around with countless germs. The amount of contamination increases as their spined legs pick up bacteria from garbage and dirt. When these critters land on surfaces and food, and/or drop waste, they contaminate it. As a result, people can contract impactful pathogens and diseases. And for those who are vulnerable the mere presence of cockroaches in a home can trigger asthma attacks and allergic reactions.
